Every year there are health trends that make you big health promises, but instead come with big health consequences that can do some serious damage to your metabolism and long term health. Here are the top health trends that I've seen backfire big time in the last few years; leaving you with nothing but broken promises.
1) Quitting sugar.
Avoiding sugar in all forms is very trendy as you see depicted everywhere, but can it also be dangerous? Read more on why you might want to consider embracing the right kinds of sugar for your health instead of quitting it.
2) Adopting a vegan diet.
Historically, are there any thriving cultures that exclude ALL animal products from their diet? Nope, but if you discover one, please let me know. Is it worth experimenting on yourself to find out? Find out the 10 vegan diet dangers here.
3) Not listening to your body (AKA the diet trap).
Anytime you over-ride your body's cravings (advice), you could be stepping into this dangerous trap. A diet might tell you to eat a 70-80% fat diet that is really only appropriate or rational for an Eskimo living in the Arctic. Or it might tell you to eat only 1200 calories a day while your body screams at you otherwise. Read more about the built-in mechanisms your body has for keeping you healthy here and here.
4) Not eating enough of the right protein to simulate eating the "whole" animal.
This trap is oh-so-common in the standard American diet where meals are always centered around muscle meats. Find out how to balance your protein intake here.
5) Hating on animal foods.
Think animal fats and protein are harmful? Getting enough animal protein (the right kind of course) can actually HELP with weight loss! Learn how to use proteins to support your weight loss goals.
6) Going supplement crazy.
Are you a supplement chaser? Do you feel compelled to continue trying more and more supplements hoping to find the holy grail of health? Health doesn't come from taking handfuls of "wonder" pills every single day and instead you're likely just flushing your money down the drain. Learn more here or how to find out how to supplement the smart way here.

Thumbs up for all the points except the first one. I wouldn't say we need to avoid all sugar completely but we definitely should limit it. Don't forget that we're getting sugar from vegetables and dairy as well in addition to fruit. In the past, humans only ate fruit when it was in season (and that's just a few months a year in most places). Now thanks to globalization we can binge on any fruit from anywhere in the world at any time of the year. That's not what our bodies are built for! Furthermore, the modern fruit is much sweeter than the ancient ones.
If one's health is perfect, of course there is no reason to eliminate or limit fruit too much. But for someone like me who is trying to eliminate cavities in the teeth and is extremely sensitive to insulin spikes or dealing with any other health issues (I believe the majority of us are in this category), eating sugar would just make the journey to health a 100 times harder if not impossible at all.

You're so right! Including fruits and vegetables in your diet is much healthier than refined sugar.

FYI - Eskimo is a derogatory term that is no longer used. It is equivalent to the "N" word. The correct term to use is Inuit. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks 🙂

It doesn't matter. it's still a term use to imply a commonly known geographical lifestyle. Get over it!

I appreciate this knowledge, Lara.

I don't see the "gluten free" diet among the list. I think it's one of the trendiest - gluten free/paleo diet. I'm kind of an an adept myself :). You think it's healthy?

Number 6 is so true! I've spent thousands of dollars over the last 2 years looking for the "right" supplements. Now I am getting off of the and eating real food instead! I feel better than I have in years.

Yeah, I have been wondering about the gluten/grain free diets that are so trendy lately. Do they hold any water? Ive read in several places they are awful for the human body and cause all kinds of diseases and that humans are not meant to ingest grains. What say you? 🙂
