Notes and resources for: Why your metabolism was FAST but now it's SLOW.
Thanks so much for listening to the master your metabolism summit and my interview! If you are looking for more information or resources pertaining the ideas discussed, the following shows related articles for more information.
Top causes of a slowed metabolism:
- Not enough calories
- Not enough carbohydrates
- Other factors: malnourished liver, nutritional deficiencies (particularly zinc, potassium and taurine), nutrient excess (vitamin A, copper and iron) poor digestion, hormonal imbalance, toxins/poor detoxification, stress, inflammation, over-exercising

How to tell when your metabolism is low:
- Low body temperature: Broda Barnes Temperature Test
- According to the research of Broda O. Barnes, MD, PhD. and his Basal Temperature Test, a waking temperature of less than 97.8 degrees upon waking indicates slowed metabolic and thyroid function. This is because the body temperature is an accurate representation of how well the cells are generating energy. A reading of 97.8-98.2° is considered normal. According to Barnes if the thyroid is underactive, a temperature of 1-2 degrees below normal will be present. A temperature of 1-2 degrees above normal can suggest an overactive thyroid.
- Note for women: body temperature usually rises about a ½ a degree at ovulation and stays elevated till the menses begins, when it drops about ½ a degree. Men can take their temperature accurately at any time of the month. Use this as a tool, as low body temperature is not always an indication of thyroid problems, but highly suggestive.
- How to take this test at home:
- Buy a basal thermometer and put by your bedside (see butternutrition.com/products).
- Upon waking, take your temperature before you get out of bed.
- Do this for about 10 days to confirm consistent result, and allow for menstrual variations.
- Low pulse rate
- The pulse is driven down by a cellular energy deficit (not eating enough food and/or nutrients) to support your energy expenditure. Slowing the pulse allows your body to go longer on less, by using less of your body’s energy. Ideal pulse rate for a high metabolic rate is a pulse rate of 80-85 beats per minute.
- “Healthy and intelligent groups of people have been found to have an average resting pulse rate of 85/minute, while less healthy groups average close to 70/minute."
-Ray Peat, PhD - How to take this test at home: Take your pulse first thing when you wake up in the morning, 20 minutes after eating, or before bed to gauge how well your body is making energy to fuel your metabolism. A very high pulse of 90 beats per minute or higher can indicate a stressful response, such as a food allergy, or can be an adrenal response to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This can happen in times of hunger, such as first thing in the morning, or if you go too long between meals, and your blood sugar drops.
- Inability to lose weight
- Digestive issues/slowed transit time
- Cold hands and feet
- Easily stressed
- Hormonal imbalance/PMS
- Poor detoxification
Most metabolism stimulating foods:
- Coconut oil
- Ripe fruits
- Potassium rich juices
- Beans/legumes
- Organic or pastured eggs
- Pastured/organic meats and wild seafood
- Root veggies and tubers
- Pastured Butter

This is helpful and I loved the interview. How do you eat butter?in coffee? Or do you eat bread? I have all the symptoms above! I just need a plan to eat these foods without gaining weight! It's like this is part of the puzzle but I don't know the best way to incorporate it all. Thanks for sharing.
